This Manual is designed for educators, psychologists, social educators, social workers, and others affected by the HIV epidemic in Russia. The manual presents contemporary concepts related to HIV-infection, the notion of stigma and discrimination; it also describes the characteristics of key social and psychological problems of the families affected by HIV/AIDS epidemics, as well as rights and responsibilities of people living with HIV. Special emphasis is given to the problems of HIV-positive women and children born to HIV-positive mothers, as well as to the importance of education in HIV prevention and support to families affected by HIV. The manual contains a chapter on the prevention of the social abandonment of children born to HIV+ mothers. The Manual was developed with technical input from the Irkutsk State Pedagogic University and oblast Centre of HIV prevention and control.
