International AIDS Day (December 1st) was traditionally celebrated by Irkutsk Red Cross staff through conducting various events. Scientific Research Irkutsk State Technical University and Irkutsk Agricultural Academy have participated in the events this year; the latter has opened its doors to Irkutsk Red Cross staff and volunteers for the first time.
There were “Information tents”, where students were offered to take counseling sessions and IEC materials. Besides, students had an opportunity of solving cross word puzzles, taking exams and graffiti tests, which contained questions, related to HIV, moreover, they could write their wishes to PLWHA. There was a possibility to contribute to the creation of the “Red Ribbon” Art-object, sticking a red ribbon to the poster, as a symbol of solidarity, so long as the event was held under the motto of «Know. Support. Join».
Overall, there were more than 500 university students and workers.
Besides conducting events at universities on December 1st , there was a “Positive Hand Shake” event, which was held downtown Irkutsk (on Uritskogo St.). Irkutsk Red Cross staff distributed IEC materials and offered to get counseled in the Red Cross vehicle. Volunteers, who were attracted to the event, wearing specially designed “If I am HIV+, will you shake my hand?” «sandwich» banners, collected “Positive Hand Shakes”. The volunteers offered to shake hands with 209 passers-by. It should be mentioned that only 44 people refused to do it, whereas other 165 gladly shook hands with the volunteers. 2 gave hugs and kisses!
