Harm Reduction of Drug Abuse among Injective Drug Addicted
Project Goal: Prevention of HIV/AIDS and other diseases among the Injective Drug Users and Commercial Sex Workers.
Implementation period: June 2002 - present
Objectives:
- Provide IDU and CSW with access to sterile instruments through street outreach work and secondary exchange of syringes;
- Increase awareness of IDU and CSW on health issues through counseling provided by outreach workers, the medical doctor of the AIDS center as well as distribution of information materials among the target group;
- Increase access to free of charge medical and rehabilitation services for IDU and CSW.
Target group:
- Injective Drug Users (IDU).
- Injective Drugs Users (IDU) involved in commercial sex work.
- Commercial Sex Workers (CSW).
Main achievements of the project:
- Mobile center for exchange of syringes operates on daily basis; outreach work along with the narcological center is being carried out;
- As of January 01, 2006, a total of 1240 clients benefited from the project services;
- A total of 2860 clients were contacted during a year.
- A total of 817 people have become regular clients of the project(people who visited for more than twice).
- Peer education as well as counseling sessions on health and legal issues is being carried out.
- Upon request, all the clients can consult the gynecologist and venereologist.
- A total of 38 people, without identification documents, went through medical examination in Skin Venereological Dispensary during the last five months.
