Progressive decrease of CD4 T-lymphocytes is one of the main markers of HIV-infection and may lead to the development of secondary infections. Monitoring of CD4 T-lymphocytes continues to be one of the key criteria to evaluate the disease progression. The regular CD4 T-lymphocytes count is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).
